A Taste glowed in bright orange neon lights across the front of a small brick building. It was the only building on the block that seemed to still be in use. Its neighbors were crumbling with boarded up windows.

I looked at Jaheim, but he only smiled reassuringly. “This is the place.”

I shook my head. “First, I still don’t know what this is and second, are you sure you’re familiar with Baltimore? Because I am and I know this is an area you don’t want to be in.”

“We’re fine. I grew up around here. Plus,” He clasped my hand, “I would never let anything happen to you.”

I sighed. “Let’s just be careful.” I looked around. People squatted on steps and rested in the shadows. It was quiet. The streets seemed deserted for a Saturday night. I pulled Jaheim closer to me.

“I feel so safe with you close by,” He laughed and squeezed my hand.

“Okay, so I didn’t grow up in the inner city, but I’m not naive.”

He shook his head. “Here. Let’s get inside before you attack someone.”

Jaheim walked toward the neon sign, pulling me along with him. We entered through a creaky wooden door. I could hear muffled noise from below us, but I wasn’t sure what the noise was. From the inside, the building looked more like an apartment complex. There was a set of stairs heading up to the floors above me and another set heading down. I looked up the stairs, but all I saw was darkness.

“This way.” Jaheim pointed to the stairs below us. On the corridor ceiling, a small light bulb flickered on and off. I followed Jaheim down the stairs as the noise gradually increased. The wallpaper had peeled and we were holding onto rusty railing, but Jaheim hardly seemed to notice.

The noise grew louder and louder until we reached the bottom of the stairs and came to a narrow hallway. At the end of the hallway, three men stood in front of a door. Their eyes fell on us. I froze and Jaheim turned to look at me.

The men watched us. I watched Jaheim, inspecting his face. How well did I really know Jaheim? He smiled at me, but I turned to walk back up the stairs.

“Natalie? What’s wrong?”

I looked from left to right. It was only me and Jaheim. My eyes fell on him. “Where are we?”

“I’m still not going to tell you,” he replied. I took a few more steps back. He watched my movements with a pinched face.

“Natalie?”

I didn’t say anything.

He held out his hand. I stared down at it.

“Do you think I would ever hurt you?”

I looked at him. We had known each other for almost four months now. The last two months we’d spent nearly every waking hour together. I had told him some things, but not everything. He had tried to tell me some things, but there were a few times when I shut him down. I didn’t want him to feel like he owed me anything, but here he was with his hand out to me.
